How to Choose the Right Products to Sell Online in Nigeria

Oct 13, 20263 min read

A beautiful online store won't succeed if the products are wrong. Before you build a store or buy stock, it's worth thinking carefully about what to sell. The right products have real demand, healthy profit margins and practical delivery. Here's how to choose them.

Start With Demand. Look for products people are already searching for and buying. Check what's popular on marketplaces, search Google for product names to see how many sellers advertise them, and watch what people ask about in Facebook groups and on social media. Demand that already exists is far easier to serve than demand you have to create.

Consider Your Knowledge and Interests. It's easier to market products you understand. If you know fashion, beauty, electronics, baby products or home goods, you can choose better suppliers, write better descriptions and answer customer questions with confidence.

Work Out Your Real Profit. Calculate your full cost per item: purchase price, shipping to you, import duties if applicable, packaging, payment processing fees, delivery subsidies, returns and advertising. Many new store owners discover their margins are much thinner than they expected. Products with low margins need very high volume to make money.

Think About Delivery. Small, light and durable products are cheaper and easier to deliver across Nigeria. Large, heavy or fragile items increase delivery costs and the risk of damage. Consider how you'll deliver within Lagos, to other states and to remote areas, and what that will cost the customer.

Check Regulations. Some products need approval before you can sell them. In Nigeria, food, drinks, cosmetics, medicines, medical devices and some chemicals are regulated by NAFDAC, and certain products may require other approvals or standards certification. Selling unregistered regulated products can lead to seizures and penalties, so check the requirements first.

Find Reliable Suppliers. Your business depends on consistent quality and stock. Test suppliers with small orders, check product quality yourself and have backup options. Running out of stock or delivering poor quality damages your reputation quickly.

Look for a Niche. Competing with large marketplaces on generic products is hard. A focused niche, such as eco-friendly baby products, plus-size fashion or office equipment for small businesses, lets you build expertise, target customers precisely and stand out.

Test Before You Commit. Start with a small range and test demand through social media, pre-orders or a simple landing page before investing heavily. Scale up the products that sell and drop the ones that don't.
