Detty December Sales: How to Get Your Website Ready Before the Rush

Oct 13, 20264 min read

From Black Friday in late November through Christmas and the New Year, the festive season is one of the busiest times of the year for Nigerian businesses. People shop for gifts, outfits, food, travel and events, and more of that shopping now starts online. If your website isn't ready, those customers will buy from someone whose website is. Here's what to do before the rush starts.

Start Now, Not in December. Changes to a website take time to build, test and get indexed by Google. Pages you publish in October and early November have a chance to appear in search results by the time shoppers start looking. Leave it until mid-December and you'll miss most of the season.

Plan Your Offers and Budget First. Decide what you'll promote before you touch the website: which products or services, what discounts or bundles, how much stock you can realistically sell and how much you'll spend on advertising. Festive promotions that aren't planned often end with discounts that wipe out profit or offers you can't fulfil.

Make Sure Your Site Can Handle More Visitors. A website that's fine on a normal day can slow down or crash when traffic rises. Check your hosting plan, compress large images and test your site's speed on mobile. A crash during a promotion is lost sales and damaged trust.

Test Your Checkout From Start to Finish. Place a real test order on your phone: add to cart, enter delivery details, pay and check the confirmation. Fix anything confusing or broken. Make sure payment confirmations and order notifications reach both you and the customer.

Create a Dedicated Festive Page. A single page for your December offers, such as gift ideas, bundles or a Black Friday sale, gives you one link to share on social media, WhatsApp and ads. It also gives Google a page to rank for seasonal searches.

Update Delivery Information. Customers want to know whether items will arrive before Christmas or before they travel. Publish clear delivery deadlines for Lagos and other states, and be honest about delays during the busy season. Disappointed customers in December often don't come back in January.

Prepare Your Customer Service. Expect more WhatsApp messages and calls. Set up quick replies for common questions about prices, delivery, payment and returns. Decide who will answer messages and when, especially over public holidays.

Make Gifting Easy. Many festive shoppers are buying for someone else. Gift guides by budget (for example under ₦20,000, under ₦50,000), gift wrapping options, gift messages and delivery to a different address can all increase orders. Corporate gifting is also big in December, so consider a page for bulk orders from companies.

Promote Through Channels You Own. Advertising costs often rise during the festive season as more businesses compete for attention. Your email list, WhatsApp broadcast list and existing customers are cheaper to reach. Tell them about your offers first, give them early access, and ask happy customers to share with friends.

Stock and Prices Must Be Accurate. Nothing frustrates customers more than paying for an item that's out of stock. Update stock levels and prices on your website before you start promoting. If you run discounts, make sure they work at checkout.

Don't Have an Online Store Yet? A simple landing page with your festive offers and a WhatsApp order button can be ready in about two days from ₦100,000. A full online store with Paystack checkout starts from ₦600,000 and takes about three weeks. If you want to sell online this festive season, start this month. Plan for January Too. The season doesn't end on 1 January. Customers who bought gifts may return to buy for themselves, and new year resolutions bring demand for fitness, learning, business and organisation products. Collect customer contacts during December so you can follow up in January with a thank-you, a review request or a new-year offer.
