How to Build Trust on Your Nigerian E-Commerce Website

Oct 13, 20263 min read

Many Nigerians have either been scammed online or know someone who has, so the first question a new visitor asks your online store isn't 'Do I like this?' but 'Is this real?' Until you answer that question, nothing else on your site matters. Here is how to build that trust.

Look Professional From the First Second. A cheap-looking store makes people nervous. Use clear, well-lit product photos, consistent colours and fonts, correct spelling and a clean layout. Shoppers can't hold your product, so the quality of your website stands in for the quality of your business.

Show That You're a Registered Business. Display your full business name, CAC registration number, physical address and a working phone number on your website, ideally in the footer of every page and on a dedicated contact page. Customers can check your registration on the CAC public search. A real address and a phone that someone answers are strong signals that you're not going to disappear with their money.

Use a Secure, Familiar Payment Method. Your website must show the padlock in the address bar (an SSL certificate), and your checkout should use a payment provider customers recognise, such as Paystack or Flutterwave. Offering pay-on-delivery for selected areas can also help first-time buyers who aren't ready to pay upfront. Clearly state which payment options you accept before checkout.

Be Clear About Delivery. Uncertainty about delivery is a major reason Nigerians abandon online orders. State delivery fees, delivery times for Lagos and other states, and how customers can track their orders. Hidden delivery costs that appear only at checkout feel like a trick and lose sales.

Publish a Simple Return and Refund Policy. Customers want to know what happens if the item is wrong, damaged or not as described. Write your policy in plain language, keep it fair and link to it from product pages and checkout. A clear policy reassures buyers more than a perfect product description.

Show Real Reviews. Product reviews and customer testimonials from real buyers are some of the most persuasive content on any store. Ask every satisfied customer for a review and display them on product pages. Link to your Google Business Profile reviews too. Never post fake reviews: customers can usually tell, and it destroys trust when they do.

Make It Easy to Reach a Human. Add a WhatsApp chat button and respond quickly. Many shoppers will ask a question before their first order just to test whether someone replies. A quick, polite answer often wins the sale.

Get the Basics of Payment Right. A broken or confusing checkout is a trust killer in itself. Our Paystack integration guide explains what a properly set-up checkout involves.

Pay on delivery can help first-time buyers trust you, but it carries a risk of refused deliveries. Many stores offer it only in specific areas or after a customer's first successful order.
