Many businesses are told that 'content is king', so they start posting on social media, writing blog posts and making videos. Months later, they have plenty of content and very few customers to show for it. Content marketing does work, but only when it's done with a clear purpose. Here are the most common reasons it fails, and how to fix each one.
You're Writing for Yourself, Not Your Customer. A lot of business content talks about the business: our team, our new office, our achievements. Customers care about their own problems. Successful content answers the questions your customers ask, explains how to solve their problems and helps them make better decisions. Make a list of every question customers ask you, and turn each one into a post.
You Don't Know Who It's For. Content written for 'everyone' is bland. When you know exactly who you're talking to, such as busy restaurant owners in Lagos or HR managers at mid-sized companies, your content becomes specific and useful. Specific content gets shared, saved and remembered.
There's No Next Step. Every piece of content should lead somewhere: to a service page, a free consultation, a WhatsApp chat, a newsletter sign-up or a product. If people enjoy your content but have no obvious way to take the next step, you're entertaining an audience without building a business.
You're Not Consistent. Posting ten times one month and nothing for the next three makes it hard to build an audience or search traffic. A realistic schedule you can keep, such as one helpful blog post a month and three social posts a week, beats an ambitious plan you abandon.
You're Ignoring Search. Social posts disappear from feeds within days, but a useful blog post can bring visitors from Google for years. Write about topics people actually search for, use the words they use in your titles and headings, and make sure your website is set up properly for search engines.
You Measure the Wrong Things. Likes and views feel good but don't pay salaries. Track enquiries, sign-ups, sales and the pages people visit before they contact you. This shows which topics and formats bring customers, so you can make more of what works.
Your Content Is Too Thin. Short, generic posts that repeat what everyone else says rarely rank or persuade. Add your own experience: real examples, local prices, mistakes you've seen, step-by-step processes and honest opinions. That's something competitors can't easily copy.
You're Not Promoting It. Publishing is only half the job. Share each new post on your social channels, send it to your email list, add it to your WhatsApp status and link to it from related pages on your website. Good content deserves to be seen.
