Influencer Marketing in Nigeria: How to Get Results Without Wasting Money

Oct 13, 20263 min read

Influencer marketing is everywhere on Nigerian social media, from skincare brands to restaurants and fintech apps. Done well, it puts your business in front of an engaged audience that already trusts the person recommending you. Done badly, it costs a lot and produces a few likes and no sales. Here's how to get it right.

Understand Why It Works. People trust recommendations from someone they follow more than they trust adverts. When a creator genuinely uses and likes your product, their audience pays attention. The key word is 'genuinely': audiences can tell when a creator is just reading a script for money.

Bigger Isn't Always Better. Celebrities with millions of followers are expensive, and their audiences are broad. Micro-influencers, with smaller but highly engaged followings in a specific niche or city, often deliver better value. A food creator with an active Lagos audience can do more for a Lagos restaurant than a celebrity with followers across Africa.

Check the Audience, Not Just the Follower Count. Before you pay anyone, look closely at their content. Are their followers in your target location and age group? Do people comment genuinely, or are the comments generic and repetitive? Are engagement levels steady, or do some posts have suspiciously high numbers? Ask for screenshots of their audience insights showing location and age.

Choose Creators Who Fit Your Brand. The creator's style, values and audience should match your business. A luxury brand working with a creator known for cheap deals sends a confusing message. Look for people who already talk about related topics and would naturally use what you sell.

Agree Clear Terms in Writing. Before any money changes hands, agree what will be posted, on which platforms, how many posts or stories, when they'll go live, whether you can review content before it's published, how long it stays up, and whether you can reuse it in your own marketing. Clear terms prevent disputes.

Give Creators Freedom. Provide key messages and facts, but let creators present your product in their own style. Their audience follows them for their voice, and a forced script usually performs worse.

Track Results Properly. Give each influencer a unique discount code or tracking link so you can see exactly how many sales or enquiries they bring. Compare the cost of each partnership with the revenue it generates. Use what you learn to decide who to work with again.

Be Transparent. Paid partnerships should be clearly labelled so audiences know when a post is sponsored. Advertising in Nigeria is regulated by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), so check the current rules for sponsored content and make sure claims about your product are truthful.

Send Traffic Somewhere That Converts. Influencer posts create interest, but customers still need an easy way to buy. Make sure your website or landing page loads fast on mobile and has a clear way to order. Read our guide on turning social media followers into customers.
