Digital Marketing Terms Every Nigerian Business Owner Should Know

Oct 13, 20263 min read

Digital marketing comes with its own vocabulary, and agencies don't always explain it. If you've ever nodded along in a meeting while someone talked about CTR, CPC and conversions, this glossary is for you. Understanding these terms helps you ask better questions and judge whether your marketing is actually working.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The work of improving your website so it appears higher in Google's free search results for the words your customers search. It covers your content, technical setup, speed and the links pointing to your site from other websites.

Local SEO. SEO focused on appearing in searches with a location, such as 'web design Ikeja', and in Google's map results. It relies heavily on your Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent address details.

Keyword. A word or phrase people type into a search engine, such as 'school website design Nigeria'. Good marketing targets the keywords your customers actually use, not the words you use internally.

SERP (Search Engine Results Page). The page Google shows after a search, including ads, map results and ordinary website listings.

Organic Traffic vs Paid Traffic. Organic traffic is visitors who arrive from free search results. Paid traffic comes from ads you pay for, such as Google Ads or Instagram ads. Organic traffic takes longer to build but keeps coming without paying per click.

Impressions. The number of times your ad, post or search listing was shown. An impression doesn't mean anyone noticed or clicked.

CTR (Click-Through Rate). The percentage of people who clicked after seeing your ad or search listing. If your listing was shown 1,000 times and clicked 30 times, your CTR is 3%. A low CTR usually means your title or ad isn't appealing enough.

CPC (Cost per Click). How much you pay each time someone clicks your ad. CPC varies by industry and competition.

Conversion and Conversion Rate. A conversion is any action you want visitors to take: a purchase, an enquiry, a WhatsApp message or a sign-up. Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take that action. This is often a more useful measure than traffic.

Bounce Rate and Engagement. Bounce rate traditionally means the share of visitors who leave after viewing one page without interacting. Google Analytics 4 focuses on 'engaged sessions' instead, which measure visits that lasted a meaningful time or included an action.

Landing Page. A page built for one specific goal, such as promoting an offer or collecting enquiries from an ad campaign. A good landing page removes distractions and has a single call to action.

CTA (Call to Action). The instruction that tells visitors what to do next, such as 'Get a Free Quote', 'Order on WhatsApp' or 'Book a Call'.

Retargeting. Showing ads to people who have already visited your website or engaged with your page. It reminds interested people to come back and complete a purchase.

ROI (Return on Investment). What you earn compared with what you spend. If ₦100,000 spent on ads brings in ₦400,000 in profit, your return is four times your spend. Every marketing activity should eventually be judged by this.

Backlink. A link from another website to yours. Links from reputable, relevant websites are one of the signals Google uses to judge your site's authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SEO and paid ads?+

SEO improves your position in Google's free search results and builds over time, while paid ads put you at the top immediately but stop as soon as you stop paying. Most businesses benefit from a mix of both.

What is a good click-through rate?+

It depends on the channel, industry and position. The useful comparison is against your own past results: if your CTR rises after you improve a title or ad, the change worked.
